Hypnosis
The best definition of hypnosis comes from the book "Hypnotherapy" Dave Elman 1964 Westwood Publishing (p. 26)

Hypnosis is not unconsciousness. The feeling is relaxed but aware.
The reason Hypnotherapy is so powerful lies in the way the human mind functions.
Your conscious mind is the "critical mind" which when relaxed, allows the therapeutic commands to be accepted in the subconscious, which is then acted upon in a healing way.
Therapeutic Hypnosis
Hypnosis on its own is very healing, as it alters your brain waves into a relaxed state of mind, a relaxed state of being.
Spanning from the Far East to the West, traditional health systems worldwide have always defined health as a wholesome balance between body, mind and spirit. As we move into the 21st Century this timeless message is once again being embraced by modern health practitioners everywhere. And rightly so, as this ancient idea of health and well-being brings much welcome relief for many sufferers of otherwise chronic, progressive or untreatable dis-ease. It’s no wonder, then, that the natural and complementary health industries are booming in our times.
Modalities that were once mocked by modern medicine, such as acupuncture and remedial massage, are now upheld by the mainstream as ideal for releasing stress and tension, and all manner of illness from the body. And the ancient practices of breathwork and meditation are readily encouraged for personal growth and spiritual wellbeing.
But what of the mind? After all the maxim is: Body, Mind and Spirit. Which suggests that mind-work, like body-work and spiritual practice, should be an integral part of healthy living and well-being. Indeed, without mental wellbeing there can be no effectual or lasting interaction between body and spirit … and the trilogy harmony is lost.
An effective ancient tool for working with the mind is therapeutic hypnosis or hypnotherapy, which aims to boost and/or restore mental balance through the healing powers of hypnosis: a remedial trance-like state which feels much like the mid point between being sleep and being awake. In this state our suggestibility is heightened and sharpened, and as such, we are more open to direction from the hypnotherapist, who is trained to access the latent force of the subconscious mind.
In hypnosis we can easily be guided towards different behaviours, such as quitting smoking or gambling, and different modes of thinking like enahnced self-esteem or increased motivation. Hypnosis is also a great tool for goal setting and reaching targets, such as for weight loss. And is helpful in controlling unconscious bodily function like allergic reactions and for pain control.
As a tool for self-impovement and psychological wellbeing hypnotherapy is outstanding, and undeniably at the very core of mind-work. By allowing us to access the subconscious mind we can use hynosis to tap into areas of ourselves that otherwise lay dormant and underutilised: to retrieve information, unleash creativity, retrace life patterns, and increase awareness.
So allow me to welcome you to the wonderful world of hypnotherapy and mind-work. I invite you to browse my website and make an appointment to see me in either Sydney or Byron Bay, and discover for yourself the gift of Mind-fulness.
"Hypnosis is a state of mind in which the critical faculty of the human mind is bypassed, and selective thinking established."
